The Permanent Fund is a very important facet of The Rotary Foundation. Contributions to the Permanent Fund are not spent, but invested. Income from the Permanent Fund (about $8 million during 2010) helps to supplement Rotarians’ annual contributions, allowing Rotary to do even more good around the world. They are a permanent legacy to help future generations of people in need. We contribute to the Permanent Fund by becoming benefactors. It is easy to become a benefactor and there are four ways to do it:
- Add a codicil to your will. A sample codicil is provided below. Our club notaries, currently Sarah Perkins and Buddy Hiatt, are available to help notarize your codicil.
- Name The Rotary Foundation as a beneficiary on a portion of an insurance policy.
- Name The Rotary Foundation as beneficiary on a portion of your IRA.
- Give an outright gift of $1,000 (options 1, 2 and 3 also require a minimum gift of $1,000).
The present value of $1,000 thirty years from now is just $131 (7% compounding), so we’re not talking about a huge amount of money. Spouses can also become Rotary benefactors. As of March 2011, our club leads the District in total benefactors, but our percentage participation could be higher. There are clubs in District 7600 that are 100% benefactors. I hope we can work our way there. We all obviously believe in Rotary, so this is a great way to support the future of Rotary.
